This sample paragraph lacks coherence, yet contains a topicsentence and all the other sentences have some relation to thecontrolling idea. owning a home is more satisfying than renting aplace. However, there is no clear connectivity between thepreceding sentence and the sentence that follows it. For example,there is no relationship between the sentence that most rentersleave their living quarters just the way they found them when theymoved in and the sentence that homeowners experience a feeling ofdeep satisfaction each time they make their mortgage paymentsbecause they know that they inch a little closer to the time whenthey will own their. homes outright. So it cannot be regarded as acoherent paragraph.
Writing a coherent paragraph
A paragraph is coherent when the sentences that compose it areclearly and logically related, so that the reader is able to followthe train of thought. A first step in achieving coherence is toarrange ideas in a logical, meaningful order. Next, the ideasshould be stated clearly, and the relationship between thesentences that state them should be clearly indicated.
